One Sunday I was asked to go from Calgary, Alberta,
Canada to Anchorage, Alaska, U.S.A. located in the northwest part of North
America to pick up a small helicopter. I had never been to Alaska
before, so the chance to go there excited me. I drove northwest in
Alberta to Dawson Creek, British Columbia which was ‘mile one' of the famed
Alaska Highway.
It was 632 miles
(1017 km) from Calgary to the town of Watson Lake, Yukon where people from
all around the world, who have visited, have left a sign from their hometown.
Hundreds of them can be seen from the hi-way on the fence posts.
From there it was another 569 miles (915 km) to the Alaska border.
Then 99miles (159 km) past the border I came to a weigh scale and had to
stop to weigh my truck and trailer, now only 319 miles (513 km) left to
Anchorage.
The scale master measured my trailer and I was told that it was too long in length to travel directly to Anchorage; I would have to go via Fairbanks to Anchorage, an extra 250 miles (402 km). I decided to go for coffee and wait until the scale was closed. An hour later I was on my way to Anchorage, the short way. |

Two days later I loaded
the aircraft and headed back south to Canada along the 2166 miles (3485
km) of roads to Calgary. After I drove into the client's yard,
I was told that this helicopter was going to South America and needed to
be delivered to Miami, Florida, U.S.A. "No problem" was
my reply.

On my way to Florida I passed through
the states of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee,
Georgia, and finally reached Miami, Florida. I unloaded the helicopter
without any trouble into a large aircraft destined for South America.

It took eleven days of driving to complete the trip from Anchorage to Miami. This is perhaps about as long a haul as one can get in North America.
Anchorage to Miami, Florida, U.S.A. is 4934
miles (7940 km)
